Rosetta 2: what is it and how to install

春哥

Rosetta 2 is Apple’s built-in “translator” that helps new Macs run older programs.

It was needed when Apple replaced Intel processors with its own chips (M1, M2 and newer), which is why the old software and new computers simply stopped understanding each other.

This program solves the problem automatically and without you noticing.

You simply, as usual, double-click on the desired application – Rosetta 2 itself translates its code on the fly, and the program runs smoothly on the new Mac without any brakes.

How to install Rosetta 2

Usually everything happens automatically. If this is your first time launching a program that is designed for an Intel processor, macOS itself will offer to install Rosetta 2.

All you have to do is agree to the installation, and then the system will do everything itself.

But in practice this window does not always appear. Sometimes the program simply won’t launch or macOS won’t prompt you to install Rosetta.

In this case, there is a more reliable way – to install it manually through the Terminal.

Installation via Terminal

1. Open Terminal (located in the Applications → Utilities folder).

2. Copy the command below into the terminal:

softwareupdate --install-rosetta

3. Press Enter. The Mac will check for Rosetta 2 and, if it is not already installed, install it.

4. During installation, the system will ask you to confirm the license agreement. Enter the Latin (English) letter “A” and press Enter (Return)

After this, Rosetta 2 will be installed on the system. The terminal will display the following:

You won’t see any separate application or icon – it runs in the background and turns on automatically when needed.

What’s next for Rosetta 2?

Apple is gradually phasing out support for older Intel software.

Rosetta will remain in macOS 27, and starting with macOS 28, its features will be retained only for some older games that use Intel components.

Therefore, regular programs will eventually need a version designed for Apple Silicon.

Rosetta will remain an important component for games for some time to come, especially for older projects that have not yet received full Apple Silicon support.
